Sakai Hôitsu, the son of a prominent daimyô family west of present-day Osaka in Himeji, was well educated and unburdened by financial or political responsibilities. He studied literature and painting in his youth, embracing both monochromatic ink and highly colorful, realistic Chinese-style painting in his studies, as well as Japanese ukiyo-e, meaning “subjects of everyday life”. The soft colors and tightly focused elements found in this painting offer the viewer an insight into Hôitsu contributions to later Rinpa painting traditions. 24 carat gold plated, hand applied enameling and accented with a pearl. 1 1/4" Length x 3/4" Width
