Louise d’Argencourt is a noted scholar of European art and the author of exhibition catalogues on Puvis de Chavannes and William Adolphe Bouguereau. With the CMA curatorial and conservation staff she has re-examined the attribution, provenance, and condition of each of the museum’s 19th-century European paintings. The professional and social milieux in which each work was created are also treated in depth. Continuing the publication of definitive scholarship begun in 1974 with European Paintings before 1500, this catalogue will be a durable reference, presenting the results of much investigation with a considerable literary style.
